The department of Psychiatry at University Carver College of Medicine oversees 72 adult and child inpatient beds as well as additional 16 in the medical psychiatry unit and 16 in the adjacent VA regional center. The outpatient clinic has more than 30,000 visits each year, over 275 of which involve new evaluations of major depressive disorder. Full-time faculty members deliver all clinical care. The department has a strong tradition of research and, in 2009, tenure-track investigators had $21 million in external support. The department has also become increasingly involved in telemedicine as a means of providing care to underserved rural areas and a number of the faculty have recently acquired external funding for research into this form of delivery.
